Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has rejected accusations of attacking the Armenian Church, APA reports citing Armenian media. He addressed the issue during a briefing.
“First of all, there was no attack on the Armenian Apostolic Church from my side. I want to note that nowhere in church documents is the person holding the position of Catholicos identified as the same as the church itself. Nowhere does it say that a bishop is the same as the church,” Pashinyan said.
He added that throughout the history of the Armenian Church, there have been instances where the Catholicos was removed or stepped down from office.
“Did the church collapse after that? No, it did not,” Pashinyan emphasized.
For context, six priests have been detained in Armenia, and charges have been filed against a relative of Catholicos II Garegin.
