Armenian Defense Minister Suren Papikyan has proposed an amendment to the law "On Military Service and the Status of Servicemen" to reduce the mandatory military service period for ordinary personnel from 24 months to 18 months, APA reports, citing Armenian media.

The minister made this proposal at a meeting of the parliamentary defense and security commission.

"This decision will come into force after January 1, 2026, and will apply to conscripts. The process of recruiting the Armed Forces within the framework of the winter call will begin from January 7, 2026," Papikyan said.

According to him, the reduction in the service period does not apply to servicemen recruited under previous calls.

Tigran Abramyan, secretary of the opposition "I Have the Honor" faction of the Armenian parliament, said that the adoption of the draft law is untimely and may cause problems with the recruitment of personnel.
