Armenia elects new President-UPDATED

The Armenian parliament has held the second round of voting on the presidential election, APA reports citing Sputnik Armenia.

Vahagn Khachatryan, the sole candidate of the ruling Civil Contract Party and Minister of High Technology Industry, was elected President by 71 votes.

The second round of the confirmation vote for Vahagn Khachaturyan as President of Armenia began in the Armenian parliament, APA reports citing Armenpress.

The secret voting started 11:30 and will last one hour.

Armenian parliament was not able to elect a new president, APA reports citing Sputnik Armenia.

The only candidate from the ruling Civic Contract party, Minister of High Technology Industry Vahagn Khachatryan, received a total of 69 votes, which was less than the required minimum number of votes (81).

Opposition factions “I have honor” and “Hayastan” boycotted the discussion of the presidential candidacy.

According to the constitution, the second and third rounds of the presidential election are possible, with 65 and 54 votes, respectively.
