Iraq carried out airstrikes on 10 Islamic State (IS) hideouts in the provinces of Kirkuk and Diyala, the Iraqi military said on Wednesday, APA reports citing Xinhua.

Based on intelligence reports, the Iraqi aircraft destroyed six IS hideouts in Kirkuk and four in Diyala, turning them into rubble, according to a statement from the Security Media Cell, a media outlet affiliated with the Iraqi Joint Operations Command.

The airstrikes were launched as part of the ongoing offensive to prevent the enemy from using its former hideouts and cutting off its logistical supply routes, it added.

The Iraqi military is committed to continuing their pursuit of terrorists until they are eliminated, the statement stressed.

A security source, who requested anonymity, told Xinhua that the airstrikes in Kirkuk and Diyala killed at least three IS militants.

He added that intelligence information confirmed that IS militants were using the hideouts as safe shelters to hide and store weapons and supplies.

The security situation in Iraq has improved since the defeat of the IS in 2017. However, IS remnants have sneaked into urban centers, deserts, and rugged areas, carrying out frequent guerilla attacks against security forces and civilians.
