Baku-APA. The United Nations' special envoy to Syria is scheduled to arrive in Damascus to hold talks about a UN proposal for the suspension of fighting in the northwestern city of Aleppo, a report says, APA reports quoting Press TV.

"[Staffan] de Mistura [expected in Damascus on Friday] will discuss his proposal with the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs," Syria's al-Watan newspaper said in a Thursday report, citing "well-informed sources".

Ramzy Ezzeldin Ramzy, De Mistura's deputy, traveled to Syria on Wednesday to prepare the ground for the UN envoy's visit, the report added.

De Mistura said on February 18 that Damascus was willing to suspend its military activities against foreign-backed militants in Aleppo for six weeks to allow for a local humanitarian ceasefire.

He also noted at the time that under the UN initiative, militants in Aleppo will be urged to stop their mortar and rocket fire.

Last October, the UN envoy proposed an action plan for areas where Syrian forces are fighting Takfiri terrorists, and said the proposal includes “freeze zones” in Syria to permit deliveries of humanitarian aid, starting with Aleppo.

In November, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad expressed his readiness to study the UN plan, saying it is necessary to work on the new proposal in order to bring back security to the city.

Aleppo, Syria’s second largest city, once served as the country’s industrial powerhouse, but has been split between a government-held western part and a militant-held eastern portion since mid-2012.

Syria has been grappling with a deadly crisis since March 2011. The violence fueled by Takfiri groups has so far claimed the lives of over 210,000 people, according to reports.
