Baku-APA. UN Security Council on Wednesday called on all states to take additional effective measures to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

The Security Council unanimously adopted a presidential statement at an open debate on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Resolution 1540, which requires the governments around the world to prevent non-state actors or terrorists from acquiring, proliferating and using nuclear, chemical and biological weapons as well as their means of delivery.

The statement reaffirmed the main provisions of Resolution 1540 and called on states to step up their efforts to implement their obligations and inform the 1540 Committee, which oversees the implementation of the resolution, of their efforts regularly.

The 15-nation council reaffirmed in the statement that proliferation of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons and their means of delivery constitute a threat to international peace and security.

"The Security Council remains gravely concerned by the threat of terrorism, and the risk that non-state actors may acquire, develop, traffic in or use nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons and their means of delivery," said the statement.

Recognizing the urgent need for all states to take "additional effective measures" to prevent the proliferation of nuclear, chemical or biological weapons and their means of delivery, the Council reiterated that "states shall take effective measures to prevent non-state actors from acquiring weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery and to establish domestic controls to prevent their proliferation."
