Baku-APA. A Russian diplomat was stabbed in arm and back in an apartment building a block away from his Embassy in Ottawa on Friday, and Canada said there is no political motivation behind this incident, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
Ottawa police said that the 44-year-old man suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to hospital while a man was arrested in connection with the stabbing.
In a comment, a spokesperson for Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development said that there is nothing to indicate this was a politically motivated incident in nature.
"We are disturbed by these reports and the department has been in touch with the Russian Embassy," John Babcock told local media in an email.
Residents of the building where the stabbing took place said many staff from the Russian Embassy and other embassies lives there.
The Russian Embassy reportedly said that it is aware of the incident, but declined to make comment.
