# 18 October 2013 01:16 (UTC +04:00)

The elected member will start their two-year term on the 15-nation council on Jan. 1.

The five endorsed candidates are Chad, Chile, Lithuania, Nigeria and Saudi Arabia, said John Ashe, president of the 193-member General Assembly.

Chad, Saudi Arabia and Lithuania have never served on the most powerful U.N. body while Nigeria and Chile have both been on the council four times previously.

To be elected, a country must win support from two thirds of the General Assembly members, or 129 votes.

Under the U.N. Charter, the Security Council has the primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security.
