The US military has sent several MQ-9 Reaper strike UAVs to Colombia and Ecuador to step up the fight against drug cartels, The New York Times reports, citing US officials.
According to the report, the US military transferred the MQ-9 Reaper drones from bases in Africa to South America. The UAVs had been used in operations against the Al-Shabaab group in Africa.
According to The New York Times, one MQ-9 Reaper can cost up to $50 million.
The newspaper writes that Colombia and Ecuador are among the countries that have agreed to conduct joint operations with the US on their territories. Ecuadorian Defense Minister Gian Carlo Loffredo earlier said that two Reaper drones had been provided to the country and were already operating in Ecuadorian airspace.
