The withdrawal of US forces from their last military bases in Iraq will be completed by September 30, Reuters reports.
It was reported that 4,500 Americans have died during more than two decades of US military involvement in Iraq.
Iran-backed armed groups have described the withdrawal of US forces from Iraq as a “historic victory” and a “crushing defeat for the American project.”
However, Iraqi security officials say the withdrawal of US forces from the country is premature. According to them, Iraq is not yet ready to operate fully independently on security matters, and the withdrawal of US forces could create a security vacuum.
Reuters notes that US forces entered Iraq in 2003 to topple Saddam Hussein’s government. US troops, who withdrew from the country at the end of 2011, returned to Iraq in 2014 as part of the fight against ISIS.
According to the report, seven of the 18 US service members killed during this year’s war with Iran died in Iraq. The latest US service member was killed in July during the controlled detonation of the remnants of an Iranian drone at a base near Erbil.
