The commander of the U.S. European Command (EUCOM), General Alexus Grynkewich, has warned the Pentagon that he may have to choose between defending Israel and protecting U.S. territory unless additional naval assets are deployed, The Washington Post reports.
According to the newspaper, which cited unnamed U.S. officials, Grynkewich sent a written warning requesting the deployment of an additional U.S. Navy destroyer.
He reportedly said that without additional military resources, the current forces would not be sufficient to simultaneously support Israel's air defense and ensure the security of U.S. territory.
The Washington Post noted that U.S. European Command coordinates military operations in the Mediterranean, where U.S. warships have been involved in intercepting missiles and drones launched toward Israel by Iran and the Iran-backed Houthi movement in Yemen.
