NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has acknowledged that some alliance members did not meet expectations set by the United States, amid ongoing tensions over burden-sharing.

In an interview with CNN, Rutte said he understood Washington’s frustrations with certain allies, noting that US President Donald Trump had expressed dissatisfaction with their positions.

He added, however, that most European countries had provided significant support, including hosting military bases, offering logistical assistance and contributing in other areas.

Rutte also confirmed that the issue had been discussed during his recent meeting with Trump, describing their talks as open and candid.

The remarks highlight continuing divisions within NATO over defence commitments and the level of support provided by member states to US-led security efforts.
