Azerbaijani MP, Deputy Executive Secretary of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party Siyavush Novruzov said on Wednesday that most NGOs in the country have indulged in populism.

There are currently 5,000 NGOs operating in the country, Novruzov told a round table in the parliament, APA reports.

"But most of them are engaged in populism. They abuse the notion of human rights and other issues to attract foreign attention and receive grants, while domestic problems such as psychological support and other issues are ignored. Therefore, NGO activity is not noticeable in the country,” he said.

The lawmaker added that there are shortfalls in the country in the area of psychological assistance and advocacy.

"There is one lawyer per 10,000 people in the country. We have made amendments to the law on advocacy, and we are changing this system. I suppose you should look at the situation with psychological help. Every family should have a psychologist, a lawyer. Just because of this deficiency, problems arise in families and among young people,” Novruzov said.
