The Supreme Court of Azerbaijan has rejected a cassation appeal filed by former OMON (special purpose police units) members Elchin Amiraslanov, Arif Kazimov, and Safa Poladov, who were sentenced to life in prison, APA reported.
In their appeal, the accused persons asked the court to commute their sentence of lifetime to a 20-year imprisonment.
All the three OMON members were sentenced to death in 1996. Later their capital punishment was commuted to life in prison. They appealed to the Garadagh district court for their lifetime sentence to be replaced with 20 years in prison. However, the court rejected their appeal. As their appeal was rejected following the court decision, they filed a cassation appeal too.
