Azerbaijan stiffens penalties for all kinds of theft

This is according to the latest additions and amendments to the Criminal Code, which were approved at the parliament’s plenary session on Friday, APA reported.

According to the amendment made to the article’s Paragraph 1, anyone charged with theft will be fined 500 to 1,000 manats or sentenced to community service for 180 to 240 hours or correctional labor work for up to 2 years or imprisonment for up to 2 years. Currently, one charged with theft is fined 100 to 700 manats or community service for 180 to 240 hours or correctional labor work for up to 2 years or imprisonment for up to 2 years.

According to the 5th part added to the article’s Paragraph 2, when committed by stealing from the victim’s pocket, handbag or another hand luggage of the victim, the thief is fined 3,000 to 5,000 manats or sentenced to imprisonment for 3 to 7 years.

According to the amendment made to the article’s Paragraph 3, the same acts are punishable by 7 to 12 years in prison if committed by an organized group or by causing a significant amount of damage or if the thief has formerly been imprisoned for larceny or extortion twice or more. Currently, the term of this penalty is 6 to 12 years.

According to the introduced in paragraph 3 of article changes, the same act, if committed: by an organized group with causing damage in large size, a person who earlier two or more times was convicted of larceny or extortion, shall be punishable by imprisonment from 7 to 12 years. Currently, the penalty ranges from 6 to 12 years.
