The handbook was translated into Azerbaijani within the framework of the EU-funded project 'Consolidation of Migration and Border Management Capacities in Azerbaijan' carried out by the International Organization for Migration.

Addressing the event, Serhan Aktoprak, Head of the IOM Baku Office said now the number of migrants worldwide is estimated at 250 million people.

He noted that more than 40,000 people have died during the migration process over the last 16 years. “There is a political will for implementation of reforms in the field of migration in Azerbaijan,” Aktoprak added.

Speaking at the event, Parviz Musayev, deputy chief of the Azerbaijani State Migration Service said over one million Azerbaijanis were subjected to internal migration as a result of occupation of 20 percent of the country's lands.

“Comparing the flow of migrants to Europe with the process, which took place in Azerbaijan, we can see how then our country acted in a civilized manner. Naturally, this was realized with the help of international organizations as well,” he stressed.

Azerbaijan has already managed to provide over one million refugees with housing and food, but the EU is experiencing such problems, Musayev added. “Each EU member country passes a different decision. Migrants are dissatisfied. In this regard, Azerbaijan’s experience should be learned,” he said.

Dragana Filipovic, Head of the Council of Europe Office in Baku said though Azerbaijan in the previous years faced a serious problem of migration, the government has successfully prevented this problem.

“Europe is facing a serious migration problem, and Azerbaijan and the CoE continue cooperating in the field of migration,” she noted.
