In the reply to APA’s question on possible activities of the ICRC to find out the whereabouts of Azerbaijanis in Syria, media contact person for the ICRC Delegation to Azerbaijan Ilaha Huseynova stated that the ongoing armed hostilities in Syria make it extremely difficult to carry out proper tracing activities for those who lost contact with their relatives: “The ICRC Delegation in Syria works in close partnership with Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC).

Tracing requests initiated by the families outside of Syria for their relatives are considered on case by case basis. It is important that the families provide substantial and precise information about their relative in Syria in order to make the tracing possible. The tracing request is opened only if the family is able to provide enough information about the sought person. The same criteria is used by ICRC's delegations and National Societies of Red Cross and Red Crescent worldwide to decide if a tracing request from a family looking for someone in Syria can be taken and processed (please see the ICRC web site: http://www.familylinks.icrc.org/ for tracing requests). These parameters apply for Azerbaijani families seeking news of a family member, as well. However, it is important that people be aware that due to the prevailing situation on the ground, the search is extremely difficult and the process is usually lengthy,” she said.
