The PACE Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights reported that former CIA employee Edward Snowden and U.S. officials will be invited to the PACE session and a special meeting will be held with their participation.

On the behalf of the Committee Dutch parliamentarian Pieter Omtzigt is currently making two reports on mass spying. These reports will likely be discussed at the spring session. At the meeting, Edward Snowden will explain why he leaked this information to public and the U.S. officials will explain why they regarded him as criminal. Pieter Omtzigt said that if Edward Snowden fails to attend the meeting due to safety problems, he will be able to join the meeting through teleconference: “Snowden will probably fail to come to Strasbourg as he is wanted by the United States. After agreeing with the Russian side, he himself will take the decision how to respond to the invitation. Even if Snowden is not able to attend the meeting, we will try to arrange a direct teleconference with him.”
