Baku – APA-Economics. Today the cost of the Internet at speeds of 1 Mbit/s is about 3% of the average monthly wage in Azerbaijan, the Minister of Communications and Information Technologies Ali Abbasov said at the Cabinet meeting held under the chairmanship of President Ilham Aliyev, APA-Economics reports.

The minister said that in the past three years, Azerbaijan is a leader among the CIS countries in terms of broadband Internet. The penetration rate of the Internet increased from 65% to 70% in 2012. Compared with 2011, the capacity of international communication has been increased by 2.2 times, and prices are reduced by about 35%.

“Today, the cost of connection to the Internet at speeds of 1 Mbit/s is about 3% of the average monthly wage in Azerbaijan. For comparison, in developing countries this figure is an average of 20%”, noted the Minister.

He also added that in 2013, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and SOFAZ have developed Optics for Home model, which will be delivered to all settlements of the country and both internet and radio, as well as other communication services will be realized via single channel within the future development of telecommunication and internet networks in Azerbaijan: “The project will be implemented in three phases. Already in 2014, 30-35% of the total project cost will be provided through reinvestment”.

“The main goal of the project is to provide broadband internet to remote regions of the country (at a speed of 10-100 Mbit/s) and expand the number of users up to 85%. Thus, thanks to this indicator, in 2017, Azerbaijan will reach the level of developed countries”, noted Abbasov.
