The coordinates of 740 Muslim cemeteries in Western Azerbaijan have been identified, stated by Aziz Alakbarli, Chairman of the Western Azerbaijan Community, during his speech at a joint event of the Caucasus Muslim Board and the Western Azerbaijan Community, APA reports.

He noted that the majority of Muslim cemeteries are being erased from the face of the earth:

“In some cases, Armenian cemeteries have been established on top of them. This is a horrifying fact and must be brought to the attention of the international community. Joint measures should be undertaken with the Caucasus Muslim Board in this regard.”

The community chairman also stated that only the remains of the Tepebashi Mosque in Yerevan have survived to this day, while many mosques have been completely wiped from the surface of the earth.

“Overall, more than 500 mosques have been identified across a geography covering 17 districts, while approximately 300 mosques have left no trace whatsoever. The protection of Muslim religious monuments is of particular importance. Many cemeteries have been destroyed, roads have been built over them, industrial and other facilities have been constructed on their sites, and in some cases, Armenian cemeteries have been established in place of Azerbaijani cemeteries. The Western Azerbaijan Community remains ready to cooperate with the Caucasus Muslims Office in uncovering the truth about the religious and cultural heritage in those territories. Joint conferences and other events in this direction are planned,” he said.
