"Armenians not only have changed the names of 449 villages in Western Azerbaijan, they have also canceled them and erased them from history," Isa Habibbayli, Academician and President of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) said during a public hearing on "Toponyms of Western Azerbaijan: from distortion of history to restoration of justice" held in Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan, APA reports.

He noted that over the 20th century, Armenians have managed to completely erase the name of Azerbaijan from the territory of present-day Armenia: "In the 20th century, everything in Western Azerbaijan has been Armenianized. This is an unprecedented incident in the world. There were wars in other places, and some territories came under the control of other states. However, there was no such policy of changing toponyms implemented anywhere. This is a genocidal policy. This is not only killing the nation, it is also erasing its name from history. This is a major international crime. It seems that the Armenians implemented this policy gradually, consistently, and purposefully throughout the 20th century. And it has also been noted that all these names were officially changed by the decision of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR at that time."
