German automaker Volkswagen has prepared a plan to gradually phase out production at four of its plants in Germany.

WirtschaftsWoche reported the development, citing an internal company document.

According to the report, vehicle production at the Emden and Zwickau plants is expected to end in 2031, followed by the Hanover plant in 2032 and the Neckarsulm facility in 2034.

The document, titled “Report on the Supervisory Board’s conceptual decision of September 3–4, 2026,” is expected to serve as the basis for a final decision by the company’s supervisory body later this week.

The document reportedly describes Volkswagen’s current situation as critical.

“Existing business models and structures are no longer sufficient to ensure the Volkswagen Group’s long-term competitiveness and profitability,” the document states.
