"We have repeatedly appealed to various organizations and international institutions regarding the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), the termination of its service life, as well as the fact that it is already in an unusable state, and we have voiced opinions about it at events," Mirhasan Hasanov, Chairman of the Public Union "Chernobyl Disabled People's Union of the Republic of Azerbaijan", told APA while commenting on the open letter addressed to the leadership of the Nuclear Energy Summit by representatives of the civil society of Azerbaijan.
Referring to the accident at the Chernobyl NPP, the Chairman of the Union said that 600,000 people were involved in various works to eliminate the consequences of the said accident.
The head of the union demanded that the said open letter be treated with respect by the international community: "In addition to our appeals to international organizations, appropriate actions should be carried out both in Azerbaijan and in other countries, with the support of international NGOs in Europe itself. European countries suffered seriously after Chernobyl. In this sense, it is necessary to ensure that such actions are held in Europe itself.
We need to achieve this so that the activity of Metsamor NPP is definitely terminated. This indicates the danger of experiencing a terrible tragedy. This means a serious danger for the states of the region and for humanity as a whole," he noted.
