“Remains believed to belong to 253 people have been exhumed from 32 mass graves discovered in the liberated territories,” Chief of Azerbaijan’s State Security Service, Colonel General Ali Naghiyev, said at the Fourth International Conference held in Azerbaijan within the framework of the Baku Dialogue on Missing Persons, APA reports.
The State Security Service chief said examinations carried out on human remains show that the Azerbaijanis who were killed had been subjected to torture: “Concealing prisoners and hostages from international organizations, killing them through torture and covering up evidence of crimes are gross violations of international law. These acts must be given a legal assessment. As a result of forensic molecular-genetic examinations, the identities of 328 people who went missing during the First Karabakh War have been established. The remains of 273 of them have been handed over to their families and buried in accordance with national and religious traditions. Of those buried, 225 were servicemen and 48 were civilians. Of the civilians, 15 were women and two were minors.
These results became possible thanks to the special attention of President Ilham Aliyev, systematic work carried out at the state level and the efforts of our specialists. Each identification provides an answer to a question that a family had been left without for years. Sensitive communication with families, regularly informing them and providing them with support are an integral part of our work."
