Plastic packaging materials are a global problem, and there are initiatives and proposals to reduce such packaging on an international level, Adil Zeynalov, head of sector at Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources told APA.

This problem is also relevant in Azerbaijan, said Zeynalov, noting that 800 years are needed in order for polyethylene to decompose under soil, and it takes 400 years under water.

He said that the chemicals in these containers pass through to the product.

"We knowingly use these containers many times. Soft drinks sold in stores are stored under the sun, and harmful substances pass into product. Many of the products brought to Azerbaijan are in plastic containers. Some countries have carried our important work to solve this problem," Zeynalov said.

The ministry official stressed that Azerbaijan’s lack of experience in recycling plastic containers creates serious problems.

"The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources will work on this. Recycling is not intended for remanufacturing. The use of plastic containers today is 10-12 percent. In the 60s this figure was 1 percent,” he added.
