All five cities bidding for the 2020 Olympics were requested to make presentations to help the IOC decide which of them will make a shortlist of finalists to be announced in May. It is the first time in any summer Olympic bid race that the IOC has held such a session.

The bids from Baku, Doha, Istanbul, Madrid and Tokyo were each given around 45 minutes to explain the technical aspects of their applicant files via video conference.

The Baku presentation team was led by the Minister for Youth and Sport Azad Rahimov and also included Konul Nurullayeva, the CEO of Baku 2020; Nazim Samadov, Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism; Elkhan Mammadov, Secretary General of AFFA and Sport and Venues Director of Baku 2020; Elmaddin Dadashov, Head of Downstream Projects Management of SOCAR; and Devrim Kara, a member of the Baku 2020 Technical Team.

Minister Rahimov said: “This was a great team effort – and I believe the IOC Working Group of experts very much appreciated our presentation and our discussions afterwards. Our next opportunity to present our Bid will come in Moscow, at the General Assembly of the Association of National Olympic Committee. We will give a 10-minute presentation of our Bid to the 1,000 members of the Olympic Family gathered there.”

Under International Olympic Committee rules, the contents of yesterday’s presentation must remain confidential.
