“The experience gained during the 44-day Patriotic War revealed the need to create new formations with flexibility and maneuverability, capable of successfully performing combat missions in high-altitude and difficult conditions. It was this need that made the creation of operational military units of the Ground Forces (Commandos) urgent. Therefore, on the instructions of President Ilham Aliyev, military commando units were created. Officers and specialists from other categories of new military units are involved in advanced training courses. The military commando units are staffed with professional military personnel with a high level of physical and combat training," an officer of the Ministry of Defense, participant of the Patriotic War, colonel-lieutenant Baba Hatamov said this in an interview with APA.
He noted that in order to become a commando, a soldier needs to successfully complete the basic course and the specialized commando course, receive a beret and a badge of the corresponding color: “The specialized commando course is a very difficult course. In it, the exercises are held under the motto "See, go unnoticed, return alive." A specialized course is conducted on the stages of combat operations in deep snow and frost, land, water and airborne commando operations, anti-terrorist operations in populated areas.
According to B. Hatamov, in order to improve knowledge and skills in special training, the personnel of the military commando units created in the Azerbaijani army are involved in commando courses held in our country and in Turkey. He added that these servicemen are being and will continue to be trained to carry out operations in various conditions.
B. Khatamov also spoke about the adaptation of the Azerbaijani army to the model of the Turkish Armed Forces.
“The fact that the fraternal Turkish state is the most reliable partner and ally of Azerbaijan, as well as the professionalism and combat experience of the Turkish armed forces, laid the foundation for the adaptation of the Azerbaijani army to the model of the Turkish Armed Forces. President Ilham Aliyev gave instructions on the transition of the Azerbaijani army to a qualitatively new level using the model of the Turkish Armed Forces as an example. In this regard, the organizational structure of the armed forces has been optimized, management has been improved and efficiency has been increased,” he said.
