Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Emergency Situations has appealed to the public over the safe installation and operation of electric vehicle charging equipment, the ministry’s press service told APA.

The ministry said the number of electric charging devices in the country has been steadily increasing amid the growing use of electric vehicles.

However, it warned that failure to comply with relevant standards and regulations during the installation and operation of such equipment could lead to fires and other dangerous incidents, posing risks to people’s lives and health as well as property.

The ministry noted that violations of fire safety requirements may cause equipment to overheat or short-circuit and could ultimately result in fires and serious consequences.

It particularly warned against the unregulated installation of charging devices in underground parking areas of apartment buildings without taking technical requirements into account, as well as the use of cables and equipment unsuitable for electrical loads, improper cable installation and the absence of necessary fire protection measures.

The ministry also said that failure to regularly monitor the technical condition of charging equipment, the use of damaged cables and devices, delays in eliminating faults and leaving the charging process unattended without observing safety requirements could create a fire hazard.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations called on individuals and legal entities involved in the installation and operation of electric charging equipment, as well as owners of electric vehicles, to strictly comply with relevant safety rules.

Charging devices must be installed in accordance with the Rules for the Installation of Electrical Equipment and the technical conditions approved by the electricity supply company, while all relevant safety requirements must be strictly observed, the ministry stressed.

The ministry warned that charging equipment must not be used if the device, power cable or charging port is damaged, or if there is a smell of burning insulation, smoke or unusual noise.

It also said it is unacceptable to use cables with damaged insulation or exposed conductors, leave them energized, or make unauthorized connections to power cables.

“Indifference to the rules puts our lives at risk. In case of danger, call 112,” the ministry said.
