It passed by 106 votes to 19. The vote, in the lower house of the French parliament on Thursday morning, was sponsored by the opposition Socialist party. The bill, which would make genocide denial punishable by a year in jail and a 45,000-euro fine, will now be passed to the Senate.
The ruling Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) representative Patrick Devechyan accused Turkey of persecution of free word, telling Turkey’s Criminal Code punishes genocide admission by a year in jail. The Socialist MP Rene Roje, saying French parliament recognized the “genocide in 2001, called double standards to go against the issue.
Governmental official Katherine Colona addressed the parliament, saying historians but not parliament should work on the history.
The ruling party member Pyer Ligulae stated that the bill is in contradiction with the Constitution. /APA/
