Russia’s aggression against Ukraine continues, and cyberattacks have always been an integral part of it, said Head of the Information Security and Cybersecurity Service of the Secretariat of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, and Secretary of the National Cybersecurity Coordination Center, Nataliya Tkachuk, at the “Critical Infrastructure Defence Challenge 2025” (CIDC-2025) event held in Baku, APA-Economics reports.
She stated that the first time a cyberattack was used together with physical weapons against civilian critical infrastructure occurred at the end of 2015.
“At that time, Russia attacked Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and power plants with the ‘Black Energy’ virus, leaving up to 300,000 people and enterprises without electricity for several hours. During the war, we quickly created an IT army of more than 300,000 volunteers — not only from Ukraine but also from other countries. They participated not only in defense but also in counterattacks,” Nataliya Tkachuk noted.
