Electronic Security Service: Investigations into Telegram and WhatsApp continue
# 09 January 2026 18:06 (UTC +04:00)

The Electronic Security Service (National CERT) continues its investigation into the recent increase in unauthorized seizure of user accounts on the instant messaging applications "Telegram" and "WhatsApp",  the ESS told APA-Economics.

It was noted that the applications received in this direction and the analysis of the discovered facts show that in many cases additional security features are not used by users. In this regard, citizens are advised to activate the two-step verification function in their "Telegram" and "WhatsApp" accounts.

To activate this function in "Telegram", the user must first enter the "Settings" section of the application, then select the "Privacy and Security" section. From here, they must go to the "Two-step verification" section, set an additional password and enter an email address for recovery. In this case, access to accounts is carried out not only via SMS code, but also via OTP code sent via alternative channels. This reduces the risk of account seizure.

In the “WhatsApp” application, you should go to the “Account” section from the “Settings” section and select “Two-step verification”. Here, a six-digit PIN code is set and it is recommended to add an email address for account security. This PIN code is periodically requested from the user and ensures account protection.

However, it should be noted that the Electronic Security Service is continuously discussing the issue with official representatives of the applications in question to resolve the issue.
