bp has reduced the planning time for new oil and gas wells by nearly six times through the application of artificial intelligence technologies, said Giovanni Cristofoli, bp’s regional president for Azerbaijan, Georgia and Türkiye, during the session titled “Leaders’ Speeches: Leaders’ Perspectives on Energy Transformation and Future Strategies” at the Baku Energy Forum, APA-Economics reports.

According to him, one of the key factors for the future development of Azerbaijan’s energy sector is combining technology with human capital and the right management approach.

Cristofoli said that bp is currently using various technologies to improve production efficiency at the ACG (Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli) fields. The company is implementing a five-year 4D seismic program, which allows tracking the movement of fluids within the reservoir.

He noted that bp and its partners have improved seismic data processing through cooperation with an artificial intelligence company operating in Azerbaijan. The company enhances data quality by removing “noise” from seismic data and is already offering its services in international markets.

“This is not just an oil and gas project. It means the development of new skills and technological capabilities in Azerbaijan,” the bp official said.

According to him, artificial intelligence technologies are also being applied in well-planning processes. These technologies make it possible to automate individual stages of the process.

“Whereas planning a new well previously took around 300 days, we can now reduce this period to approximately 50 days,” Cristofoli stressed.

He added that the use of geosteering and horizontal drilling technologies enables more accurate well placement and more efficient recovery of reserves.

According to the bp executive, alongside technology, strong partnerships and human capital also play a crucial role in the development of Azerbaijan’s energy sector.
