Azerbaijan was awarded the “Medal of Excellence” in cybersecurity at the WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 international skills competition, held in Shanghai, China, from September 22 to 27, APA-Economics reports.
Ali Maharramli and Yusif Kazimli, employees of the Information Security Department of the Innovation and Digital Development Agency (IDDA), who represented Azerbaijan at the competition, scored 702 points.
This is Azerbaijan’s first-ever award in cybersecurity in the history of WorldSkills.
The Azerbaijani team achieved a higher result than teams from a number of countries, including India, Korea, Thailand, Japan, Malaysia, Australia, and Brazil. The team also achieved a high result among participants in the cybersecurity subcategory “Implementation of Defense Solutions Against Cyber Threats.”
The selection of candidates was conducted in the Capture The Flag (CTF) format. A total of 80 people participated in the first stage, held on December 20, 2025. Based on the results of the second stage, held in January 2026, 10 selected candidates took part in an intensive training program from February to August.
