Azerbaijani delegation participates in ITU Council annual session

The annual session of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council kicked off today in Geneva, Switzerland. The session is attended by the Azerbaijani delegation, which includes representatives of the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport, as well as the Permanent Mission of Azerbaijan to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva, the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport told APA.

The Council, the governing body of the organization, coordinates the activities of the ITU, monitors the implementation of relevant conventions and controls the organization’s budget and financial resources. Azerbaijan was elected to the Council at the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference held in Bucharest from 26 September to 14 October 2022 and was one of 48 countries represented in the body.

The session will discuss strategic aspects of ITU’s global ICT policy and opportunities to respond to today’s challenges, and exchange views on improving the organization’s performance.

The event will also focus on the preparatory process for the World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC) to be held in Baku from 17–28 November 2025. On the first day of the session, a report of the ITU Telecommunication Development Bureau on the topic was heard.

The head of the Azerbaijani delegation, Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport Sameddin Asadov made a presentation on preparations for the upcoming conference.

He noted the importance of holding WTDC-2025 in Baku for our country and emphasized Azerbaijan’s commitment to promoting digital development on the basis of equal opportunities for all and strengthening global cooperation through technology.

“This conference, which occupies an important place in the International Telecommunication Union’s calendar of events, will be an important platform to shape the future development of global telecommunications and advance our common digital goals,” said Sameddin Asadov.

During the event, the deputy minister also met with ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin and Director of the Telecommunication Development Bureau Cosmas Zavazava. The meetings discussed the possibilities of expanding cooperation with ITU and the progress of preparations for the WTDC-2025.

During meetings with representatives of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Poland, views were exchanged on bilateral cooperation in the field of digital development and prospects for partnership within ITU.

The session will run until 27 June.
