Azerbaijan to join ITU Council

A meeting of the Council of the International Telecommunication Union is being held in the city of Geneva, the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport of Azerbaijan told APA-Economics.

Azerbaijan is represented at the event by a delegation led by Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport Samaddin Asadov.

At the Council meeting, the report of the World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC-25) held in Baku, preparations for the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference to be held this year, as well as for the World Radiocommunication Conference and the Radiocommunication Assembly scheduled for 2027 were discussed. The Strategic and Financial Plan for 2028–2031 and other issues were also in focus.

Azerbaijan’s candidacy for membership in the Council of the International Telecommunication Union for 2027–2030, as well as the candidacy of a representative of Azercosmos for membership in the Radio Regulations Board, has been presented.

On the sidelines of the Council meeting, Deputy Minister Samaddin Asadov met with ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin. During the meeting, information was provided on measures implemented in Azerbaijan in the field of digital development, and opportunities for expanding existing cooperation were discussed.

The Deputy Minister also held bilateral meetings with Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure of Türkiye Omer Fatih Sayan, Deputy Minister of Digital Development, Innovations and Aerospace Industry of Kazakhstan Doszhan Musaliyev, and Deputy Minister of Industry and Information Technology of China Xiong Jijun.

These meetings were significant in terms of presenting Azerbaijan’s position in the field of digital development at the international level, expanding the exchange of experience in artificial intelligence and innovation, as well as creating new opportunities for bilateral and multilateral cooperation.

Note that an informal meeting of ministers was held before the Council meeting of the International Telecommunication Union. The use of new technologies by member states, increasing private sector participation, improving the financing model, updating cooperation with the United Nations, and other issues were discussed.
