“We want Germany-Turkey relations to be stable. As you know, German citizens of Turkish origin are many. We want to live with them in peace,” German MP Kai Gehring, who is visiting Baku, said in a statement to APA.
He noted that Turkish President Erdogan must return to democratic principles.
“Human rights and supremacy of law are key. Of course, if German citizens are getting arrested in Turkey for no reason, we can’t stay silent,” he said.
With regard to the discussions on Turkey’s possible accession to the European Union, the Bundestag member said the talks are frozen at the moment.
“For us, there are democratic principles such as supremacy of law, freedom of opinion, and protection of human rights. The discussions can only be resumed when Turkey takes all these principles into consideration,” he stressed.
