"The General Assembly of the Global South NGO Platform holds special significance within this year’s WUF13," Director of the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation Dima Al-Khatib said in her video address to participants of the first General Assembly of the Global South NGO Platform held within the framework of Baku Urban Week, APA reports.

She noted that the platform is convening for the first time in this important global urbanism environment, responding to the need for a more connected and influential voice of civil society in shaping the global urban development agenda.

Dima Al-Khatib emphasized that civil society is indispensable for the development of South-South cooperation: “NGOs bring local knowledge, trusted relationships, and practical innovations. We turn solutions into real impact.”

According to her, inclusive cooperation is of particular importance in addressing challenges such as urban resilience, climate change, and inequality. In this regard, the UN official highlighted the importance of active participation of least developed countries, small island states, and landlocked countries in the platform.

Dima Al-Khatib added that the new cooperation initiative established by the institution she represents will be “a multilateral platform bringing together diverse partners, solutions, and financing opportunities”: “There is strong alignment between this initiative and the Global South Platform. Both initiatives aim to highlight the leadership, knowledge, and solutions of developing countries.”
