UN Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers, Margaret Satterthwaite

The 67th General Assembly of the International Association of Judges (IAJ) will be held in Baku, on October 11-17, APA reports.

The prestigious event is expected to bring together about 300 judges, representatives of international organizations and lawyers from 71 countries.

Margaret Satterthwaite, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers will also arrive in Baku. Her participation will lend special importance to the discussion of the role of courts in ensuring the rule of law at the international conference on the relationship between the judiciary and other branches of government.

The International Association of Judges, of which the Azerbaijan Union of Judges has been a member since 2009, takes important steps towards protecting human rights and judicial independence.

Elections for the organization's governing bodies and president will also be held at the General Assembly.
