UN: Caribbean nations unable to fully tap tourism potential due to existing limitations

“Although the countries of the Caribbean basin have excellent tourism potential, they cannot fully utilize this potential due to restrictions,” said June Christine Marie Soomer, a member of the UN Permanent Forum on People of African Descent, at the international scientific conference titled “Imperial System: Colonial Ideologies and Realities,” organized by the Baku Initiative Group in Baku, APA reports.

She emphasized that while peoples and states living under colonial conditions should consider their economic development, they are instead thinking about how to overcome this situation: “One of the best responses to colonialism is to improve the quality of education in such countries. We must not forget the genocide and inhumane treatment of peoples in colonial countries. Looking at economic development, Caribbean basin countries have significant potential for this. The countries in this region should strive to become part of the global community uniting to fight colonialism. We already have a unified trade platform. One of the main shortcomings of our states is the lack of territorial units, as well as the inability to extract and sell the natural resources we have. Although Caribbean countries have excellent tourism potential, they cannot sufficiently use this potential due to limitations. We do not have an army because the Caribbean basin consists of peaceful countries. Despite being small states, countries like Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, and others have constitutions. At the same time, our country has diplomatic relations with many African states. I believe that if we want independence, we must first start with ourselves, or more precisely, with our mindset. Tourism development is a priority for us, and we must achieve our goals together in this field. To escape imperialism, it is also necessary to develop our education. Because of economic dominance, we cannot develop in this regard. To get rid of the consequences of colonial policy, extensive analyses must be carried out and all processes must be conducted accordingly.”
