The mission of Igor Garafulic, Acting Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Azerbaijan, has come to an end, the UN Representation in Azerbaijan said, APA reports.
According to the information, Igor Garafulic will assume the position of UN Resident Coordinator in Brazil starting June 1.
During the visit of diplomats to Karabakh and East Zangezur in May 2026, Igor Garafulic emphasized that such visits are of great importance for gaining first-hand insight into Azerbaijan’s reconstruction process, history, and agenda for sustainable peace.
One of the notable areas of Igor Garafulic's work was his support for the preparations for the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13), hosted by Azerbaijan. Within this framework, he accompanied United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, Executive Director of UN-Habitat Anacláudia Rossbach, and other high-level representatives during their visits to Azerbaijan. The mission highlighted Azerbaijan’s high level of preparedness to host one of the UN’s flagship global events on sustainable urbanization and created opportunities to strengthen cooperation in the fields of sustainable development and urban transformation.
Igor Garafulic expressed his gratitude to the Government of Azerbaijan, partner institutions, and the UN country team for their support.
It should be noted that Dmitry Shlapachenko, who is currently serving as the head of the UN mission in Turkmenistan, has been appointed as the new UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan.
