“It is believed that three crew members of the ship that sank off Northern Cyprus may be Azerbaijani citizens,” Özdemir Tokel, Head of Communications of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), told APA in response to an inquiry.
He said that no information has currently been received regarding the presence of Azerbaijani citizens among the passengers.
“So far, I have not come across any Azerbaijani citizens among the passengers. However, if a person is both an Azerbaijani and Turkish citizen and entered the country using a Turkish passport, we would not be able to identify them. For this reason, determining information about persons with dual citizenship may require additional checks,” the statement noted.
It should be noted that a passenger ship sank off the coast of Northern Cyprus yesterday. So far, 242 people have been rescued, eight people have died, and the search for 17 people continues.
Eight people have been detained in connection with the incident.
