The world is currently moving along a more dangerous and alarming geopolitical trajectory, said Tobias Ellwood, former member of the UK Parliament, during the panel discussion titled “China and the Global Governance Initiative” held within the framework of the 13th Baku Global Forum, APA reports.

He noted that the possibility of a Third World War exists:

“A war is not expected to occur in the same form as the Second World War. However, there is a possibility of a global-scale confrontation. If we do not accept that this is possible, it means we are denying reality and are being dragged in that direction.”

He also stressed that the world is currently facing new challenges: “Rising energy prices, ensuring energy supply for economies, the management of water resources, as well as competition for dominance in areas such as artificial intelligence and quantum technologies are creating new areas of confrontation between states. Clear rules and effective cooperation mechanisms have not yet been formed at the international level in these areas. The absence of consensus among the world’s leading powers on new global rules weakens cooperation, and as a result the globalization process itself is entering a phase of fragmentation.”
