The historic peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia was achieved at a time when the world lacks peace-oriented and enlightened leaders, said President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste and Nobel Peace Prize laureate José Ramos-Horta at the opening ceremony of the 13th Global Baku Forum, APA reports.

“I would like to thank President Ilham Aliyev and the Nizami Ganjavi International Center for inviting us once again to Baku. I congratulate the President for rightfully winning the 2026 Zayed Award for Human Fraternity. I also congratulate Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, who also received this award. The historic peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia was achieved at a time when the world lacks peace-oriented and enlightened leaders,” the President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste noted.

He noted that another war that could easily be prevented has now occurred: “The war against Iran is one of the classic examples that could have been prevented. When the lessons of history are not taken into account, history repeats itself and bodies pile up. At present, we have a system of relatively clear rules and institutions that has existed for 80 years, yet our world is moving toward an abyss. Laws and rules are applied only to small and weak countries. International law should not be applied selectively. There are cases of violation of justice and trust, loss of basis for internal cooperation. I respectfully remind Western leaders that if this continues, everyone may lose.”
