The Speaker of the Milli Majlis (Parliament) of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Sahiba Gafarova, who is on a visit to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, attended the opening ceremony of the 46th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations on September 18, the Press and Public Relations Department of the Milli Majlis told APA.
Speaking at the plenary session of the General Assembly, Sahiba Gafarova said that with the increasing importance of parliamentary diplomacy, ASEAN has become an important and successful platform that brings parliaments together and creates new ideas and opportunities for closer cooperation.
Recalling that since 2022, the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan has been participating in the work of ASEAN as an observer, the speaker said that this reflects Azerbaijan's intention to further develop its multifaceted relations with Southeast Asian countries, and inter-parliamentary cooperation is considered an important direction of these relations.
Sahiba Gafarova brought to the attention of the event participants that the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement, established at the initiative of the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, and currently chaired by the Milli Majlis, signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with ASEAN in March 2023. In her speech, the Speaker of the Milli Majlis, who also spoke about the huge construction and reconstruction work carried out by Azerbaijan in the liberated Karabakh and East Zangezur regions, said that the revitalization of these territories is an important component of the Azerbaijani government's approach to inclusive development and sustainability.
