Prosecutor General’s Office representatives participate in UN Congress on Crime Prevention

Representatives of the Prosecutor General’s Office participated in the 15th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, the Prosecutor General’s Office told APA.

Vugar Aliyev, Head of the Department for Coordination of Special Confiscation Issues of the Prosecutor General’s Office, and Babek Zakirzade, Deputy Head of the Department of International Legal Cooperation, participated as part of the delegation of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the 15th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on October 26-28.

During the event, topical issues related to combating new and emerging forms of crime, preventing organized crime, improving criminal justice systems, applying modern technologies, and strengthening international cooperation were discussed.

On September 27, a high-level special event titled “Winning the Fight Against Crimes that Affect the Environment: From Pledges to Results” was held within the framework of the Congress, organized by the Ministry of Interior of the United Arab Emirates and jointly organized by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The event, which was also attended as panelists by UNODC Executive Director Monica Juma, INTERPOL Director Lucas Philippe, French Minister of Justice Gerard Darmanin, and Dana Al Marzouqi, Director General at the UAE Ministry of Interior, discussed current challenges in combating organized crime and corruption in the environmental sphere, wildlife crime, forest crime, illegal mining, illegal waste trafficking, pollution, and crimes in the fisheries sector. The importance of coordinated activities, operational cooperation, and the exchange of best practices and information among law enforcement agencies in this field was emphasized.

Speaking at the event, Vugar Aliyev noted the transnational nature of crimes that affect the environment and emphasized the importance of expanding practical cooperation between states and international organizations, coordinating the activities of law enforcement agencies, and effectively using modern technologies in combating this type of crime.

At the conclusion of the event, the “Abu Dhabi Call to Action 2026 on Crimes that Affect the Environment” initiative was presented. The voluntary initiative envisages promoting the prevention of and fight against crimes that affect the environment as a shared international priority and further expanding cooperation among states, international and regional organizations, law enforcement agencies, and other partners.
