The meeting held in Abu Dhabi between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan once again demonstrated Azerbaijan’s leadership in the peacebuilding process in the South Caucasus, Member of Parliament Fatma Yildirim told APA.

The MP noted that Azerbaijan is taking active initiatives to transform the South Caucasus region into a space of peace and cooperation: “Azerbaijan, having restored its territorial integrity and sovereignty, is the author of the new realities in the region. These new realities are exactly what promote the prospects for peace and cooperation in the region. The absence of such opportunities until now was due to Armenia’s 30-year-long occupation of Azerbaijani lands. Now Azerbaijan has put an end to the occupation by its own strength and has offered Armenia to sign a peace agreement. In March of this year, both sides announced that the text of the peace agreement had been fully agreed upon.”

Fatma Yıldırım noted that Azerbaijan’s leadership is evident throughout the entire process: “This factor also gives grounds to view the July 10 meeting between the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, with optimism. During the meeting between President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan, various aspects of the interstate normalization agenda were discussed. According to the official information released following the meeting, it was confirmed that bilateral negotiations are the most effective format for resolving all issues related to the normalization process, and based on this, the continuation of such result-oriented dialogue was agreed upon.

At the Abu Dhabi meeting, the leaders who assessed the progress achieved in the border delimitation process instructed the relevant state commissions to continue practical work in this direction. The sides also agreed to continue bilateral negotiations and confidence-building measures between the two countries. We hope that this meeting will yield concrete results for peace.”
