On July 10, 2025, within the framework of the 3rd extraordinary session of the International Civil Defence Organization (ICDO) General Assembly held in Baku city, for the first time, a representative of the Republic of Azerbaijan was elected to the position of Secretary-General of the said Organization, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told APA.
The elections were held in a highly competitive environment.
“In the elections for the position of ICDO Secretary-General, alongside the head of the department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, Arguj Kalantarli, candidates from 3 countries competed.”
The candidate of the Republic of Azerbaijan, having gained the support of the majority of the countries participating in the first round of voting (23 countries), was elected to the position of Secretary-General of the prestigious organization.
The main function of ICDO, the only intergovernmental organization in the field of civil defense, is the protection of the population and assistance to it during natural and man-made disasters, strengthening the capacities of structures involved in eliminating the consequences of these disasters, and promoting international cooperation in this area.
The ICDO Secretary-General, being the highest position in the organization, is responsible for representing it at the international level, leading its structural units, ensuring the functionality of the Secretariat, and other important areas,” the MFA statement says.
