On September 3, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov met with President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Pere Joan Pons Sampietro, who is visiting Azerbaijan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told APA.

During the meeting, issues on the cooperation agenda between Azerbaijan and the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, existing security challenges in the OSCE area, the situation in the region, as well as the Azerbaijan-Armenia peace agenda were discussed.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov noted that Azerbaijan attaches importance to cooperation with the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly and that interparliamentary dialogue plays an important role in promoting mutual understanding, trust and cooperation in the OSCE area. In this context, the contribution of the activities of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis within the OSCE PA, mutual visits and meetings held at various levels to the development of relations was emphasized.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov informed the other side about the measures taken by Azerbaijan to ensure peace and stability in the region. The progress achieved towards the normalization of Azerbaijan-Armenia relations and Azerbaijan’s position on advancing the peace agenda were brought to attention.

Among other issues, touching upon the humanitarian issues existing in the region in the post-conflict period, Minister Jeyhun Bayramov said that the mine threat still remains a serious danger to Azerbaijan. It was noted that, in addition to the threat mine explosions pose to human life, they hinder restoration and reconstruction work in the territories liberated from occupation, the return of internally displaced persons to their native lands, and the process of regional development.

The Minister also emphasized that determining the fate of nearly 4,000 missing Azerbaijanis is an important humanitarian issue.

The meeting also featured an exchange of views on Azerbaijan’s contribution to regional and broader international energy security. Information was provided on Azerbaijan’s role as a reliable energy partner in ensuring Europe’s energy security, projects implemented to diversify energy sources and routes, as well as initiatives in the field of green energy.

Azerbaijan’s contribution to the development of regional connectivity as a country located at the intersection of transport corridors was noted. The importance of developing the Middle Corridor, expanding transport and logistics opportunities connecting Europe and Central Asia across the Caspian Sea, as well as opening regional communications in terms of peace, stability and economic development was emphasized.

The meeting also touched upon the developing dynamics of Azerbaijan’s strategic partnership with Central Asian countries. It was noted that the transformation of the C5 format into the C6 format has created new opportunities for cooperation.

The meeting also featured an exchange of views on existing challenges in the OSCE area and other regional and international issues of mutual interest.
