"We are working to have the Khojaly genocide recognized in the Iraqi parliament," said Arshad Rashad Salehi, a member of the Iraqi parliament, during his speech at the "Turkman Heritage: Solidarity of Civil Societies" forum held in Baku, APA reports.
"We have linguistic and cultural ties between Iraq and Azerbaijan, our common heritage – Fuzuli. Our poetry and culture have always been one. The first massacre against the Turkmens was committed by Armenians in 1920 after World War I. In 1975, Saddam's regime invaded Turkmen lands and handed them over to other countries which was an attempt to separate the Turkmens from their national identity. As Iraqi Turkmens, with the strength of our poetry, culture, and history, we have tried to preserve our national identity in these lands. We have never forgotten our language, history, and culture," the Iraqi MP said.
He also noted that they are working to have the Khojaly genocide recognized in the Iraqi parliament.
