Hikmet Hajiyev: Multilateralism is important for Azerbaijan not only in words, but in practice

We were concerned that some participants might not be able to attend due to the current situation, but that did not happen, Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, said during his speech at the panel discussion titled “Multilateralism in Crisis: Rethinking Global Cooperation” held within the framework of the Global Baku Forum in Baku, APA reports.

He thanked everyone who participated in the forum.

Hikmet Hajiyev noted that there are serious crises in multilateralism, peace, and security.

“This is directly related to the UN Security Council and its mandate. The participation of the UN Security Council in resolving global issues is very weak. Multilateralism is important for Azerbaijan, not only in words but in practice. When we joined the Non-Aligned Movement, there were criticisms, but Azerbaijan’s chairmanship allowed the Non-Aligned Movement to gain influence. Important decisions were also adopted as a result of Azerbaijan’s effective chairmanship of COP29. At the same time, Azerbaijan is playing an important role in the Organization of Turkic States. We have also joined the D8 organization. At the global level, the lack of political will in multilateralism is clearly visible. On the other hand, certain multilateral organizations face criticism because they lack accountability,” he said.
